WHO IS BBA?

Barley Breeding Australia is the coordinator of Australia’s national public barley breeding investment, servicing Australia’s barley growers, marketers and end users.

In June 2006 Australia’s six state-based, public barley breeding programs agreed to form Barley Breeding Australia, a joint venture national breeding program.

The parties committed to jointly service the needs of all Australian barley growers and end users through a national breeding effort conducted at three nodes (Warwick, Adelaide and Perth), and with supporting germplasm evaluation programs at Wagga Wagga and Horsham.

BBA’s OBJECTIVES ARE TO:

  • Provide Australian growers with agronomically superior varieties competitive in global markets, and that meet the varied quality requirements of malt, feed and special purpose end-users;
  • Encourage and coordinate commercialisation of varieties to the overall advantage of the Australian barley industry;
  • Foster the exchange of germplasm and other intellectual property amongst its members, and capture synergies arising from a coordinated breeding program, and
  • Contribute to education, training and teaching programs related to barley breeding.
